Question

Assalamualaikum.

What is the ruling on women using semi-permanent cosmetics or procedures that give them a look of having used cosmetics, that lasts for a longer time than ordinary cosmetics (into months I am told), such as microblading. There was fatwa that I came across online, but it's in Arabic, and unfortunately, I don't understand Arabic: https://youtu.be/hSZm5donf_Y

Answer:

In the video mentioned above, the imam has stated the ruling of 2 things, tattoos and microblading. He stated that tattooing is haram and microblading is permissible.

Some scholars, like in the video above, have permitted microblading over the fact that it is not completely permanent and due to that reason, it falls under the category of temporary adornment which is generally permissible, similar to make up.

Contrary to that, another group of ulema argue regarding the permissibility on the bases that this falls under (changing of the creation) which is prohibited in the Quran and is mentioned as the trick of the devil to the slave of Allah. There are also many authentic hadith that curse tattooing and shaping the eyebrows, these hadith are found in Bukhari, Muslim, and others.

This group of scholars, although they accept the general differences between microblading and tattoos in terms of one being permanent and the other not, they have still deemed it impermissible as it is semi-permanent and not permissible since it is a type of tattooing.

For this reason, it is best to refrain from the act and to at least consider the action as extremely reprehensible.
