Question:

Assalamu Alaikum.

Dear respected Mufti Sahib,

I pray you are in the best of health and Iman. I have a query regarding the common polite request in wedding invitation cards for “no boxed gifts” i.e. only monetary gifts. I recently read a fatwa (see https://nawadir.org/2016/10/14/no-boxed-gifts/#more-2257) that it was haram. I wished to get your own opinion on this matter as people usually give gifts (monetary or otherwise) at weddings and such a request would help to avoid the newlywed couple from the disappointment of receiving the same gift more than once (e.g. who would need more than one kettle or tea set?).

Answer:

Our view is the same as that mentioned in the fatwa that you have cited in your question. It also should be clarified that the fatwa does not state that it is Haram to write ‘no boxed gift’ but rather it points out that to write and expect such things are against the morals and principles of Islam and therefore best to avoid it.
