Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

What is the ruling on giving "Salaam" when entering the Masjid main prayer hall?

– Please provide different opinions from amongst the jurists

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

Giving salam to the people in the masjid will fall under the general ruling of spreading salam to anyone and everyone.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Spread salam amongst yourselves.”[1]

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim writes: “The one who enters the masjid should begin with the two rakah of Tahiyyatul Masjid, then he should come and give salam to the people.”[2]

Hafidh Ibn Rajab writes: “The one who enters the masjid and passes by people he should give them salam first before commencing his prayer.”[3]
