Question
1-I have noticed that the muqtadis stand up when the mukabbir says hayyaalassalah or hayyaalalfalah, when should the muqtadis stand, before the Iqamah or at hayyaalassalah and hayyaalalfalah, what is the correct method?
2-When should the Imam say the takbeer e tahrima at qadqamatissalah or after the Iqamah has ended?
3-What was the practice during the time of Prophet S.A.W and the Sahabah for the above 2 questions?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer
It is considered one of the etiquettes of Salah for the Imam and the followers to stand up when the Muazzin says Hayaalal Falah. However, it should be borne in mind that this is only desirable in situations where the Imam is near to the Mihrab. If the Imam is not present but is in a different room, then it is not necessary to stand up at Hayaalal Falah, but the followers will stand up as soon as they see the Imam.
The aforementioned ruling is based on preferability, hence, no one should be scolded or rebuked for not doing it. (Raddul Muhtar p.177 v.2 & Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband p.213 v.2)
Regarding the second question, the Imam should start the Salah at the completion of the Iqamah. This is the opinion of Imam Ahmad, Malik, Shafi and Imam Abu Yusuf. The Hanafi fatwa is on this opinion of Imam Abu Yusuf. Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam Muhammad are of the opinion that the Salah should start at Qad Qamatis Salah. (Durre Mandhuud p.123 v.2)
The practice of the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam can be seen from the following hadith where he said, “Do not stand up (for prayer) unless you see me…” (Sahih Bukhari)
