Question

When you pass out the urine, how can you make sure, there are no drops left in the urethra? is the use of the left hand is necessary for performing istinja after passing urine or only the use of water is sufficient? After passing the wind, it will only nullify the ablution?

Answer

We will need to divide your queries into parts and sections.

• It has been written in Fatawa Mahmoodiyyah: “That according to recent research about urine drops, it has been agreed that everyone will have this issue that urine drops will come out after a person has been to the toilet to relief. Therefore, it’s important that a person after urinating should use the means of absorbing the drops by using stone or mud or tissue paper. This should be a process of about 5 minutes (subject not having any illness). If in a rush a person then should place some tissues by the private place so then the clothing doesn’t become impure. Before performing wudhu the person should remove the tissue and give the private part a wash and then do wudhu. (Fatawa Mahmoodiyyah Vol, 5, Pg 290, Darul Iftaa Jamiah Farooqiyah)

Also, it has been mentioned in the hadith: Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by two graves and said, "Both of them (the persons in these graves) are being tortured, and they are not being tortured for a cardinal sin. But indeed they are great sins. One of them used not to save himself from being soiled with his urine, and the other one used to go about with calumnies (among the people to rouse hostilities, e.g., one goes to a person and tells him that so-and-so says about him such and such evil things)."

The importance of safeguarding ourselves from the drops of urine from the hadith is visible.

• Istinjaa (washing after relieving one's self) is Sunnah. It is permitted to use a stone and whatever can take its place in order to wipe until the impurity has been removed. There is no fixed amount for this. It is most virtuous to wash using water. If the impurity passes over the place of exit, no form of Istinjaa will be permitted but water. One cannot use a bone, droppings, or food items for Istinjaa, nor is one permitted to use the right hand. (Mukhtasar Al-Quduri, English translation version, Pg 32, Mustafah Publishers)

A similar ruling and view is mentioned in Fatawa Mahmoodiyyah Vol, 5, Pg 290.

• If someone passes wind, he/she will only be required to perform wudhu and ablution and there is no need of changing the clothes.

The Prophet (peace be upon Him) has mentioned: “When one of you breaks wind then let him perform Wudu (Sunnan At-Tirmidhi)
