Question:

I will be getting married soon and am in search of a ring (and watch). When looking at the choices for rings, there are a few typical metals that they come in, (obviously not including gold) I had been informed by a friend that Platinum and Palladium may not permissible for men to wear and to buy Silver instead. Please can you advise what Metals are restricted or allowed for men to wear in rings or watches and what you would advise?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The Prophet (pbuh) mentions in a hadeeth,

Translation: Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib:

A man came to the Prophet () and he was wearing a signet-ring of yellow copper. He said to him: How is it that I notice the odour of idols in you? So he threw it away, and came wearing an iron signet ring. He (the Prophet) said: What is it that I see you wearing the adornment of the inhabitants of Hell? So he threw it away. He asked: Messenger of Allah, what material I must use? He said: Make it of silver, but do not weigh it as much as a mithqal,

Men are allowed to wear a mixture of attributing elements in their ring, as long as the silver in it is the dominant factor. They are not allowed Platinum, titanium or any other metal. The weight of the silver ring must be maximum of 4.37g or less.

Relating to the Prophet (PBUH),

“The Prophet [SAW] forbade gold rings.”

Watches are another form of jewellery, so they follow the similar ruling.

It is advised to be cautious regarding which clothing and jewellery is attired. May Allah bless your marriage and bless you in every form of goodness relating to it.

Only Allah knows best.
