Question:

Is it haram to work as a receptionist in the hotel where you give a room to non-married people? And sometimes it happens that drinks are taken from a small fridge that is for the reception, alcoholic drinks and I have to accept money. Surely that’s haram, isn’t it? And at the same time as an accountant in the hotel, where you have to check all the bills and enter a lot, including the bar bills?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

In principle, there are two aspects which are considered in determining whether one’s income is Halaal or not:

  1. The major source of the funds from which the employees of the company are remunerated.
  2. The nature of the job profile/description itself.

As far as your query is concerned, if the majority of the income of the hotel you work for are from Halaal sources, both your income and job will be Halaal. Your job as a receptionist is merely to process the transactions. Also you are merely handing over the keys to the clients. You are not responsible for what they do afterwards. Since you are not directly conducting the sale on behalf of your employer, your job is permissible.

However, one should try his best to work at such a place where the entire income will be halal.

Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
