Question
If someone works for a company that pays 10% of their employee’s salary in stocks of the company, but the company’s stock is not Shariah compliant because 5% or more of the profit is from riba, what can the employee do?
Sell the stock immediately? In that case, would he have to do tasadduq of the 5%?

Answer:
Mufti Taqi Uthmani has laid out four main principles:
- The company must be halal and comply with Shariah principles.
- The company should have acquired its fixed assets already.
- If the main business is halal, but the company engages in activities such as borrowing on interest or placing funds in interest-bearing accounts, it is the responsibility of a Muslim shareholder to voice opposition to these practices during the company’s annual general meeting.
- When receiving dividends, the shareholder must calculate the portion of the company’s profit that comes from interest-bearing accounts. The corresponding portion of their own dividend should then be given to those eligible to receive Zakah.
