I was praying when my phone rang and because I was very anxious I broke my nafl salaah to answer. A friend said that I have to make a new wudhu. My other friend rather more knowledgeable said no this does not affect the wudhu. Please inform me of your kind opinion.

Eight things nullify wudhu. These are:

1- Discharging of urine, stool or the coming out of anything from the private parts.

2- Discharging of gasses

3- Vomiting in mouthful

4- To fall asleep lying down or by resting the body against something.

5- To faint due to some illness or any other reason.

6- Becoming insane or going mad

7- Laughing aloud in namaaz so that people near around him can hear him

8- Flowing of blood or matter from any part of the body.

With regards to your question your wudhu will remain intact, but in future situations you are not needed to break your salah. It would be better if you put your phone on silent or switch it off completely before salah. If one forgets to do this, and the phone goes off in salah then one should simply cut off the call by using one hand, without looking at the phone. This would not come under the category of Amal Katheer.

Amal katheer are those extra actions which a person makes while he is in prayer, the onlooker looks at him and thinks that this person is not in salaah. Also, if a person was to use both his hands for an extra action in salaah then this would also come under amal katheer, and if a person used one hand but he did that action many times then this also comes under amal katheer. (Aap ke Masaail p314 v2)

We learn from the above text that it would have been sufficient for you to put your hand in your pocket and cut off the call, but this should be ones last resort.

It is also important to note the ruling of breaking ones nafl salaah.

When a person starts a nafl salaah then it becomes Waajib (obligatory) for him to complete that salah. If for some reason he broke the salaah he would have to make qadaah of that salaah in other words he will have to repeat that salaah. (Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband p179 v 4)
