Question:

I’ve heard a scholar saying if a person missed his fardh salah, the sunnah and nawafil he perform will compensate for it. That on the day of qiyamah, Allah will look at our fardh act and if it is not complete then it will take from the optional salah.

Is that correct ?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

What the scholar mention is incorrect. Perhaps he didn’t understand the hadith or he got mixed up. A person missing salah, he must make qadha of it when he remembers. It will not come out of one’s responsibility neither can an optional salah compensate for it.

The hadith mentioned is as follows:

“The first thing for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayer. If it is complete, then the voluntary (prayers) will also be recorded for him (as an increase). If it is not complete then Allah will say to His angels: ‘Look and see whether you find any voluntary prayers for My slave, and take them to make up what is lacking from his obligatory prayers.’ Then all his deeds will be reckoned in like manner.”

If it’s not complete doesn’t mean a person didn’t perform the salah but it means if a person have deficiency in the salah Like his concentration and devotion or to be at complete rest in the postures. Then only the optional salah will be brought to complete and perfect the faraidh.

In the Quran Allah says (Surah muddathir ayah 42 and 43)

“What has brought you to Saqar: Hell? They will say, “We were not among those who offered salah (obligatory prayer)”

A person missing his salah will be thrown in the fire of jahannum. Therefore the hadith means a person have to perform his fardh salah. But if there is anything missing in the fardh salah then the optional salah will be brought to perfect the fardh salah.

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ. قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ
