He (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhoever recites a harf of the Book of Allah will have one hasanah for it, and each hasanah brings a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-L\u0101m-M\u012bm is a harf; rather Alif is a harf, laam is a harf and meem is a harf.\u201d (Tirmidhi &amp; Abu Daw\u016bd)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Prophet used to recite various verses and Suras at different times and occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">With regards to your question about what to recite before sleep, the following are a list of Suras:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Surah al-Sajdah and Mulk:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">J\u0101bir Ibn Abdullah said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThe Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not go to sleep until he had recited \u201cAlif, L\u0101m, M\u012bm. [This is] the revelation of the Book\u201d [Surah as-Sajdah] and \u201cTab\u0101rakalladhi bi yadihi\u2019l-mulk (Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion\u201d(Tirmidhi)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Im\u0101m Abdurrahman Al-Mub\u0101rakp\u016bri states that the meaning of the above Hadith is that it was not his (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) habit to sleep without reciting these Suras. (1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Surah al-Isr\u0101 and Surah al-Zumar:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Our mother \u0100\u2019isha (May Allah be pleased with her) narrates that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThe Prophet (peace and blessings of All\u0101h be upon him) would not sleep in his bed until he has recited Surat Bani Isra\u2019il and Al-Zumar\u201d (Tirmidhi)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Surah Ikhlas, Falaq and an-N\u0101s:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u0100\u2019isha also narrates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">\u201cThat when the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) went to his bed every night, he would put his cupped hands together, then blow into them, then recite into them\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><em>QulHuwaAllahuahad<\/em><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><em>Qula\u2019udhu bi Rabb il-Falaq<\/em><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><em>Qula\u2019oodhu bi Rabb il-N<\/em><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">\u0101s, then he would wipe his hands over as much of his body as he could, starting with his head and face, and the front part of his body. He would do that three times\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> (Bukh\u0101ri)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">There also narrations that he would recite the Musabbih\u0101t i.e Surah Al-Hadid, Al-Hashr, Al-Saff, and Al-Jumu\u2019ah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u0100yatul Kursi:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThe Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) put me in charge of guarding the collected zakaah of Ramadan. Someone came and started to rummage in the food. I took hold of him and said, I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).\u2026 He [the one who came and rummaged in the food] said, When you go to your bed, recite Aayat al-Kursiy and you will be protected by Allah, and no devil will come near you until morning. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, \u201cHe told you the truth even though he is a liar. That was a devil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0(Bukh\u0101ri)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Along with the verses and Suras there a number of prophetic supplications that can be recited before sleep. To know more, you can read the chapter of supplications in J\u0101mi al-Tirmdhi.
