Regarding doing istikharah for someone else?<\/span><\/strong><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In order to answer this question, I would need to know what you understand by Istikh\u0101ra. Often people ask \u201ccan you do Istikh\u0101ra for me or for my child\u201d and they mean something other than the Istikh\u0101ra taught by the Prophet.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let me, first of all, explain what Istikh\u0101ra is and then I shall return back to the above point. The word Istikh\u0101ra in Arabic means \u2018seeking the good\u2019 and is done to seek Allah\u2019s support and guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jabir Ibn Abdullah said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Messenger of All\u0101h (peace and blessings of All\u0101h be upon him) used to teach his companions to make Istikh\u0101ra in all things, just as he used to teach them surahs from the Qur\u2019an. He said: If any one of you is concerned about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two rakahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cO All\u0101h, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O All\u0101h, if in Your knowledge, this matter (then it should be mentioned by name) is good for me both in this world and in the Hereafter (or: in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs), then ordain for me the good wherever it may be and make me pleased with it.\u201d (Bukh\u0101ri)<\/span><\/p>\n

Istikh\u0101ra prayer is an individual\u2019s personal seeking of guidance from All\u0101h concerning uncertain matters. Therefore, it is not normal practice to ask someone else to do this on one\u2019s behalf.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Coming back to the point I made in the beginning about people\u2019s understanding of Istikh\u0101ra, I am aware that some people in the Asian community use the term in relation to finding out about black magic and Jinn’s possession. Istikh\u0101ra is not done for this purpose. If a person is afflicted by black magic or Jinn possession then they should seek help through permissible Ruqya which is done with Quran, Sunnah, and using Allah\u2019s names and attributes.<\/span><\/p>\n
