I have a question regarding the permissibility of wearing gold wristwatches. I am interested in buying a watch that has an 18k gold case, while the dial and watch strap is made of other materials (in this case the watch has a leather strap and the dial is made out of a non-gold material). To be clear, the watch itself is not entirely made of gold. Only the case (i.e. side and back area of the watch) is made of gold, while the majority of the watch is made out of non-gold materials. Considering that a watch has a practical function (therefore not being the same as jewellery) and that a relatively minor part of the overall watch is made of gold, is it permissible for me to wear this watch as a male Muslim?<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the case of items that have a mixture of gold and other metals, the item will take the ruling of whatever material most of the item is made from or whatever its main\/essential parts are made from.1<\/sup><\/a> So, if for example, something is 60% silver and 40% gold then it will take the ruling of silver. Or for example, if a jug is mostly made of silver and just has some gold decoration or a gold handle then it will take the ruling of silver.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is difficult to judge without seeing, whether the watch you describe is mostly gold or other materials. The case is a major part of the watch too as it will be the whole back of the watch and its sides\/rims.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If it is less than the majority composition of the watch, then it will be permissible otherwise it will not.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If in doubt it will be better to purchase a watch where there is no gold.<\/span><\/p>\n
