If a dementia person is deemed to be insane for the majority of the month of Ramadhaan, the rules of an insane person would apply to them ie fasting is not wajib upon them nor would they need to give fidyah<\/span><\/p>\n

The following is a definition of dementia provided by Mayo clinic:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dementia is a term used to describe a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with your daily life. (1)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thus, we can establish that as a dementia patient, one is not completely in their senses depending on the severity of the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Based on this, it would depend on the state of the dementia patient, if he is not able to understand the obligations and isn’t in his senses, then he will be ghayr aaqil and this means he is not mentally stable or aware. In this case, fasting will not even be obligated to him. On the other hand, if he is in his senses but illness means he cannot go through a fast or feels that by fasting, the illness will get worse, but, this person understands the obligations and is aware of it, then he doesn’t fast but pays fidya. Thus, in response to your query, it would depend on the person and their state. Accordingly, they will be considered insane\/ghayr aaqil otherwise sane but sick.<\/span><\/p>\n
