 <\/p>\n

If I helped someone pay off their debt but they didn\u2019t physically ask me to pay it – he is currently in rehab – then do I pay Zakaat on that amount even though I might not get the money in the future – if he is able to pay me with time I will take – if not then I won\u2019t hold him accountable<\/span><\/p>\n

In the name of All\u0101h<\/em>, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Answer:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To provide help to another is a reward worthy act. May All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101<\/em> reward you for that.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBe steadfast in Sal\u0101h<\/em> (prayer), and pay Zak\u0101h<\/em>, and bow down with those who bow down (in worship and obedience)\u201d. [Surah al-Baqarah; 2:43<\/em>] [1]<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If, after making the repayment, there is reasonable doubt that you will not be able to recuperate this money, then you may consider this amount as spent and no longer a part of your wealth.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If, however, later on, this person is able to repay you. Then, at that time you will need to backtrack the missed years of Zak\u0101t <\/em>(i.e., do Qadha<\/em> of the missed years).<\/span><\/p>\n
