I am taking long-term medication for blood thinning due to having been in the hospital recently with blood clots in my lungs. The consultant has said that because the cause isn’t known I must take them indefinitely as I am likely to develop clots again in the coming years. I am instructed to take them at the same time twice a day and not delay them more than 12 hours apart. I am also taking iron tablets 3 times a day due to anaemia. My periods have become extremely heavy due to the medication and are causing hair loss, weakness and fatigue. Therefore, iron tablets are also a long-term supplement. It will take at least a year for my body to recover from the clots as well. Due to the medication, I believe I won’t be able to fast during the coming Ramadhan as I won’t be able to take my medication on time regularly. However, I am considering making them up in the winter when the days are shorter. I am not entirely sure whether this is sensible yet as it could contribute negatively to my health. I am willing to give it a try this winter to see how it goes insha’Allah<\/span><\/p>\n

Am I required to pay fidya and still try to make the fasts up later, or shall I stick to just paying fidya? If you can advise me that would be very much appreciated. May Allah SWT bless you and your family, Ameen.<\/span><\/p>\n

If there is hope that you can make up the fasts, then you should not give the fidya, rather you should make up the fasts when you can1<\/sup><\/a>. However, if you reach such a point of bad health that you know that you are unlikely to ever fast again, then you should give the fidya for each fast.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The fidya for fasting can be done during a person\u2019s lifetime if they know that they will never again be of sound health with which they can fast. However, if a person has been given the fidya and then regains health, they will have to make up all those fasts.2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In your situation, I would advise trying in the winter or after your medication settles and you make a recovery to see how it goes. If during the winter you are unable to fast and after your recovery, you are still unable to fast, it would be best to give fidya.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

May Allah give you a complete and swift cure and grant you the ability to fast and perform all the other good deeds that you intend. Ameen.<\/span><\/p>\n
