When ulama say that it is permissible to look at women’s faces when talking provided there is no desire or fear of desire. Does that apply nowadays if some women dont even wear hijab?<\/span><\/p>\n

And will it be permissible to just glance once at a cousin while talking out of necessity to make clear who the addressee is? Even if she dosent wear hijab.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do my best never to look at a strange woman but since I live with my uncle many interactions with cousins happen<\/span><\/p>\n

All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101<\/em> says: \u201cAnd tell the believing women that they must lower their gazes and guard their private parts, and must not expose their adornment, except that which appears thereof, and must wrap their bosoms with their shawls, and must not expose their adornment…\u201d [Surah An-Noor<\/em>; 24:31] [1]<\/span><\/p>\n

All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101<\/em> further states: \u201cO Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves part of their\u00a0Jal\u0101b\u012bb<\/em>\u00a0(outer garments).\u201d [Surah al-A\u1e25z\u0101b<\/em>; 33:59] [2]<\/span><\/p>\n

The entire body of a free woman is her Awrah<\/em>, except her face and hands. [Al-Bin\u0101yah: vol. 2, pg. 137-138<\/em>] [3]<\/span><\/p>\n

All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101<\/em> implores us: \u201cDo not even go close to fornication. It is indeed a shameful act and an evil way to follow.\u201d [Surah Al-Isr<\/em>\u0101<\/em>; 17:32<\/em>] [4]<\/span><\/p>\n

The Prophet \ufdfa said: \u201cBeware! Avoid sitting on the roads (ways).\u201d The people said; \u201cThere is no way out of it as these are our sitting places where we have talks.\u201d The Prophet \ufdfa said: \u201cIf you must sit there, then observe the rights of the way.\u201d They asked: \u201cWhat are the rights of the way?\u201d He \ufdfa said: \u201cThey are the lowering of your gazes<\/strong> (on seeing what is illegal to look at), refraining from harming people, returning greetings, advocating good and forbidding evil.\u201d [\u1e62\u0101\u1e25\u012b\u1e25 <\/em>al-Bukh<\/em>\u0101r\u012b<\/em>: Hadith 2465<\/em>] [5]<\/span><\/p>\n

The ruling on lowering one\u2019s gaze stands as a preventative measure to protect us. The evils of which are clearly visible in our societies when this ruling is exploited. A woman\u2019s face is the pinnacle of her beauty; thus, many scholars of our time have necessitated the use of a Niq<\/em>\u0101b<\/em> as a means of protection for all those around her including herself.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If one fears lust or even a hint of possibility towards any Fitnah<\/em> occurring then he must lower his gaze. Maintaining eye contact with the opposite gender is not a requirement for conversational.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Caution must be stressed when addressing one\u2019s cousins as they are not Mahram<\/em>. If you are living with them, then that holds its own difficulties as Hij<\/em>\u0101b<\/em> will be mandatory between yourselves. All efforts should be exhausted to ensure that the rights of Shariah<\/em> are not exploited.<\/span><\/p>\n
