I had a question concerning raf\u2019al yadayn<\/em> (raising hands before and after ruk\u016b\u2019u). It has come to my knowledge that it was originally commanded by the Prophet Mu\u1e25ammad (peace and blessings be upon him<\/em>) because the Muslims used to hide idols under their arms, and this \u201craising of hands\u201d would drop the idols. Later after the Muslims realized that it was wrong, he (Prophet Mu\u1e25ammad) (peace and blessings be upon him<\/em>) forbade it so we should not do it. Is all this true?<\/span><\/p>\n

I have not come across any such reliable report to prove the truth of the notion that hands were raised to drop hidden idols during prayer. In fact, the source texts prove that this notion is false, inaccurate and fabricated.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The \u1e62a\u1e25\u0101bah (may All\u0101h be pleased with them<\/em>) who embraced Islam with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him<\/em>) were steadfast on taw<\/em>\u1e25<\/em>\u012bd <\/em>and stayed far away from idol-worship and or shirk<\/em> (association of partners with All\u0101h). This is the very reason why the Almighty announced His pleasure upon them by declaring, \u201cHe is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Raising and not raising hands before and after ruk\u016b\u2019u<\/em> are both acceptable ways of performing the prayer (\u1e63<\/em>al\u0101h<\/em>) according to the various schools of jurisprudence. Some of the \u1e62a\u1e25\u0101bah, as well as pious predecessors and Muslims afterwards continue[d] to practice the raf\u2019al yadayn. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muh\u0101jir\u012bn<\/em> (migrants) and the An<\/em>\u1e63<\/em>\u0101r<\/em> (helpers), and those who followed them with good conduct, God is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.\u201d \u2013 (Qur\u02be\u0101n: 9:100)1<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Al\u012b ibn Ab\u016b \u1e6c\u0101lib (may All\u0101h be pleased with him<\/em>) reported, \u201cWhen the Messenger of All\u0101h (peace and blessings be upon him<\/em>) stood for offering the obligatory prayer, he uttered the takb\u012br<\/em> and raised his hands to his shoulders; and he did the same when he finished recitation and was about to bow; and he did the same when he rose after bowing; and he did not raise his hands in his prayer while he was in his sitting position.<\/span><\/p>\n

When he stood up from his prostrations, he raised his hands likewise and uttered the takb\u012br<\/em> and raised his hands so as to bring them up to his shoulders, just like he uttered the takb\u012br <\/em>in the beginning of the prayer.\u201d \u2013 (Ab\u016b D\u0101w\u016bd 744)2<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n
