It was narrated by Muslim (2260), Abu Dawood (4939), Ibn Maajah (3763) and Ahmad, from Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: \u201cWhoever plays with dice, it is as if he were dipping his hand in the flesh and blood of a pig.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dice is not haram because of the dots or because of putting numbers on it, it’s har\u0101m because most games that require dice are used for gambling, or placing a game of chance. Besides that, if money is not used, yet it causes a waste of time then there is no benefit in playing such games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of Hanafi Fuqaha like Imam al-Haskafi have mentioned that it is makruh tahr\u012bmi<\/em> to play al-Nard and likewise chess.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the commentators amongst our scholars said it is the al-Nard that is played. It was invented by Shaaboor bin Ardisheer bin Taabak. His father was Ardisheer, the first king of the Sasanians. He symbolised the Earth with the board. The four sections represent the four seasons. The markings are thirty due to thirty days. The black and the white symbolises night and day. The twelve homes symbolise the months. The dice represent heavenly decrees. Playing with them represents acquisition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nard\u00a0<\/em>was a type of game invented by the Persians, a cube-like shape made from wood with multiple sides similar to modern dice that was used for fortune-telling, an indication of one\u2019s destiny or for gambling. Shihab Khafagi, a prominent lexicalist stated, \u201cNard<\/em>\u00a0is what the Persians invented indicating to one\u2019s destiny or an indication of one\u2019s intellect interfering with acquiring (something) of high status.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Most board games nowadays do not involve fortune-telling but rather played for time leisure. Thus, if no gambling is involved it will be permitted only if it does not distract one from Allah\u2019s remembrance, and it does not prevent one from fulfilling his\/her Shar\u2019i duties, and does not have any elements which are against the Shari\u2019ah.<\/span><\/p>\n
