 <\/p>\n

If a piece of land was bought with the sole intention of developing condominiums to sell, would that land be considered merchandise before the development of the condominiums? If so, will Zakat be paid annually from the time of purchase?<\/span><\/p>\n

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Answer:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In principle, zak\u0101h is only paid on land or property that one buys with the intention of selling. Zak\u0101h is not paid on a property one buys with the intention of renting it out or building on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Therefore, you do not need to pay zak\u0101h on the value of the land on which you intend to construct the condominium, neither now nor when the construction has finished. Needless to say, you must pay zak\u0101h on the income generated from those condominiums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, if the property was purchased for commerce i.e. to sell, then due to it becoming ma\u0304l-e-tija\u0304rat (wealth used for business), it will become wa\u0304jib to give Zaka\u0304h upon the value of the property; otherwise, it will not be necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n
