Aslamualaykum, my mother and I were wondering if it’s halal to work at a grocery store because they sell alcohol. However, I did say we could but I wanted an Islamically correct view on it. If you can shed some light on this topic for me in sha Allah I would be delighted to hear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/strong><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The fact that you are concerned about where your earnings are accrued from is praiseworthy. It makes evident your consciousness of All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101 <\/em>and your desire to obey Him. The Prophet \ufdfa said that earning a halal income is an obligation beyond other obligations. [Shu\u2019bul Iman lil Bayhaqi: Hadith 8367<\/em>] [1]<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101 <\/em>also commands \u201cDo not aid in sin.\u201d [Sur\u0101h M\u0101\u2019idah, 5:2<\/em>] [2]<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Prophet \ufdfa has said \u201cA time will come when one will not care how one gains one’s money, legally or illegally.” [Sahih Bukhari: Hadith<\/em> 2059<\/em>] [3]<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhosoever fears All\u0101h<\/em> (by abstaining from sins and fulfilling his obligations) All\u0101h<\/em> will open up ways for him out of every difficulty. All\u0101h<\/em> will provide sustenance for him from such avenues which he least perceives. Whoever places his trust in All\u0101h<\/em>, All\u0101h<\/em> will suffice him. Indeed, All\u0101h<\/em> will accomplish His purpose. All\u0101h<\/em> has already set a measure for all things.\u201d\u00a0[Surah at-Talaq<\/em>; 65:2-3<\/em>] [4]<\/span><\/p>\n

The Prophet \ufdfa said \u201cDo not delay (in earning) sustenance, for the servant will not die until his last provisions reach him. (So) take what is Hal<\/em>\u0101l <\/em>and leave what is Haraam<\/em>.\u201d [Sahih Ibn Hibb\u0101n<\/em>: Hadith<\/em> 3239<\/em>] [5]<\/span><\/p>\n

These are reminders for us that our earnings have already been fixed by All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101<\/em>. Now, whether we choose to receive these earnings through Halal<\/em> means or Haraam<\/em> is up to us. One way or another, whatever has been destined for us will reach us.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nonetheless, it is upon us to go out and actively seek a Halal<\/em> means of earning and then we place our trust in All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101<\/em> to grant it to us. This has always been the method of All\u0101h Ta\u2019\u0101l\u0101,<\/em> that is, we first have to make an effort and then All\u0101h’s<\/em> aid will reach us.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Specifically, in regard to your question, it would be permissible to work in such an environment so long as the majority of the income of the business is attained via Halal<\/em> means. It is also worth noting that as an employee of such a company, you are not the one supplying, procuring, sourcing, or facilitating the Haraam<\/em>. You would simply be working as an employee of the company. Nonetheless, working for such a company would carry an element of kar\u0101’ha<\/em> and dislike. One should actively endeavour to find alternate means of work where there’s no doubt in the earnings being Halal<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n
