My main job is creating foley sounds and various sound effects, which I upload to various stock and gaming marketplaces. To create these sound effects, I often download additional sounds from the internet. Recently, I downloaded a sound that included a human voice, and I used this sound to create 500 different sound effects, which I then uploaded to the marketplaces.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After four months, I realised that the human voice I used is actually an “Om” sound recorded by a Hindu man. This realisation has caused me great concern.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now that I know the sound effects I used are actually the Hindu “Om” sound and used that sound effect I created 500 sound effects: if I choose not to delete these sound effects from the online marketplaces, knowing they contain this “Om” sound, will I be committing kufr?<\/span><\/p>\n

After conducting small research on the topic at hand, it seems like foley sounds are custom-made sounds that are used primarily in the post-production of movies, TV shows, videos and video games to enhance the audio quality in synchronisation with the picture [being displayed].<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Foley sounds are essentially the reproduction of everyday sound effects such as footsteps, wind blowing, glass breaking and other ambient noises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The phrase \u2018Om\u2019 is a part of Hindu mantras or sacred formulas, and it is considered the greatest of all mantras.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe syllable\u00a0<\/span>om<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is composed of the three sounds\u00a0<\/span>a-u-m<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(in\u00a0<\/span>Sanskrit<\/span><\/a>, the vowels\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>u<\/span><\/i>\u00a0coalesce to become\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span><\/i>), which represent several important triads: the three worlds of earth, atmosphere, and heaven; thought, speech, and action; the three qualities (<\/span>guna<\/span><\/i><\/a>s) of matter (goodness, passion, and darkness); and the three sacred Vedic scriptures (<\/span>Rigveda<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Yajurveda<\/span><\/a>, and Samaveda). Thus,\u00a0<\/span>om<\/span><\/i>\u00a0mystically embodies the essence of the entire universe. From the above, it is clear, that the \u2018Om\u2019 phrase\/chant is unique to these faiths and that they incorporate it in their rituals, prayers etc. Thus, the usage of such a phrase or chant, even if it be mixed with other sounds or effects, would not be permissible in general, nor would it be permissible to make money through its usage.<\/span><\/p>\n

You have not committed kufr in this situation. Kufr is the opposite of Iman. Furthermore, kufr can be divided into \u2018actual kufr\u2019 and \u2018apparent kufr\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Actual kufr is the <\/span>consistent opposition<\/b> to the beliefs and dictates of Islam whereby the doer acknowledges such actions [being done] and <\/span>does not consider them to be disbelief.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Apparent kufr, or \u2018acts of kufr\u2019, are those acts committed that contrast with the commands of Allah (SWT). However, the individual committing these wrongs acknowledges that such acts [in belief or deed] are not in line with the dictates of Islam.[1]<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Know that one does not remove oneself from the faith of Islam, except through [perpetual] blatant denial or opposition to its tenets and dictates.[2][3]<\/span><\/p>\n

Having said that, you acknowledge with certainty, that the renditions that were uploaded onto certain stock and gaming marketplaces contain the \u2018Om\u2019 chant, and as a result, the deeming of it to be non problematic would constitute an act of kufr and not actual kufr itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

The money from the sales that you made prior to fully realizing that the \u2018Om\u2019 chant was incorporated will be halal for you. Allah\u2019s mercy is such that He pardons and overlooks honest mistakes\/ignorance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
