Question:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span>1. I know that Baddridin Al Ayni was a famous Hanafi jurist who studied Sahih Al Buhari. I would like to know what he said about raising hands before the Ruku and after the Ruku after his research of the best compilation of authentic Hadith.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span>2. Some of the late Hanafi scholars stated that any gap between Fard and Sunnah prayers (I mean two rakats after the Dhuhr, Maghrib and Isha)without a weighty Sharia reason diminishes the reward for the above-mentioned 2 rakats of Sunnah prayer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n


\n<\/span>If someone after Fard makes a decision to offer Sunnah at home and after reciting the Adhkars he talked long enough with some brothers on religious or worldly topics or he met somebody on the way home and had a conversation or he had to go shopping. Do these actions influence the reward of the 2 rakats of Ratibah? \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Did early Hanafi scholars agree about diminishing the reward or are they opinions of late Hanafi jurists?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>I can’t imagine that someone who wants to offer Sunnah Ratibah at home will not say a word after Fard and keep silent before coming home.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Q1.<\/b> The\u00a0<\/span>Ahnaaf\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(Hanafi Madhab) have given <\/span>tarjeeh<\/span><\/i> (preference) to hadith narrations which indicate that the <\/span>rafu\u2019l yadain<\/span><\/i> (raising of hands) in Salah are only for the first takbi<\/span>r<\/span> at the beginning of the Salah. This is because most of the Sahaaba (senior companions of the Messenger of Allah <\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) did not continue the practice of\u00a0<\/span>rafu\u2019l yadain\u00a0<\/span><\/i>during Salah thereafter. The respective narrations suggest\u00a0<\/span>rafu\u2019l yadain<\/span><\/i>\u00a0was abrogated because the Prophet <\/span>\ufdfa<\/span> towards the end of his time, and his companions after his demise discontinued the practice:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ibn Mas\u2019ud [ra] says, \u2018I shall show you how Nabi [<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>] performed Salah and he only made Raf\u2019ul yadain in the beginning of Salah.\u2019 [Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 257] <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ibn Mas\u2019ud [ra] says, I prayed with the Messenger of Allah [<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>], Abu Bakr (ra) and Umar(ra). They did not raise their hands except at the beginning of the prayer. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The narrations which mention that the Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) raised his hands before going into ruku\u2019 and after rising from ruku\u2019, refer to the earlier portion of the life of our Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>). Later in his lifetime, the Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) abandoned this practice and hence this practice became Mansukh (cancelled). Therefore, it was no longer sunnah to raise one\u2019s hands before going into ruku\u2019 and after rising from ruku\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

An additional proof is that Ali (Radiyallahu Anhu) did not raise his hands before going into ruku and after getting up from ruku\u2019, although he had narrated that the Holy Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) did it. This is because Ali (ra) knew that the Holy Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) only did this in the earlier part of his life and that later on he abandoned it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The reference to raising the hands before going into ruku\u2019 as discussed by Allamah Badruddin al-Ayni can be found in his detailed commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, \u2018Umdat al-Qari, in which he elaborates on the hadiths found in Sahih al-Bukhari that relate to the actions during salah, and he cites the various opinions of the scholars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to Imam Abu Hanifa and his companions, the hands are raised only once during the salah, which is at the beginning during the first takbeer (the saying of “Allahu Akbar” to signal the start of the salah). This position is shared by other notable scholars such as al-Thawri, al-Nakha\u2019i, Ibn Abi Laila, Alqamah ibn Qays, al-Aswad ibn Yazid, \u2018Amir al-Sha\u2019bi, Abu Ishaq al-Sabi\u2019i, Khaithamah, al-Mughira, Waki\u2019, \u2018Asim ibn Kulayb, and Zafar.<\/span><\/p>\n

The practice of raising hands at the first takbeer only is also noted in the narration from Ibn al-Qasim who reported it from Malik, indicating that it is a well-known view within the Maliki school of thought and upheld by Imam Malik’s companions. Imam Al-Tirmidhi acknowledges that this view is supported by several of the Prophet Muhammad\u2019s companions and followers, including Sufyan and the people of Kufa.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Furthermore, it is reported in “Al-Bada’i” that Ibn Abbas stated that the ten companions of the Prophet Muhammad, who were assured of Paradise, only raised their hands at the start of the prayer. His summary reflects a significant variation in the practice of raising hands during the salah, with many notable early Islamic scholars and jurists advocating for limiting this action to the beginning of the salah only. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thus, according to the Hanafi madhab, hands are only raised in the beginning of salah when doing the takbeer tahreemah. Thereafter, raising one\u2019s hands before bowing into ruku\u2019 and after rising from ruku\u2019 during the salah is not considered a Sunnah act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q2. <\/b>It is recommended to stand up soon after the obligatory prayer to\u00a0perform\u00a0the sunnah\u00a0prayer that follows. The Prophetic Sunnah indicates that the recommendation is to separate between the two, as the Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) used to do when he said the salutation, he would stay for the time it took to say,\u00a0\u201cAllahumma antas Salamu wa minkas Salamu, Tabarakta Ya thal Jalali wal Ikram\u201d –\u00a0 \u201cO Allah, You are peace, from You is peace, and to You returns peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of majesty and honour.\u201d\u00a0Then he would stand up for the Sunnah prayer immediately after.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is narrated from Aisha (ra) that the Prophet (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) used to sit for the time it took to say:\u00a0\u201cO Allah, You are peace\u2026,\u201d\u00a0\u2013 \u201cAllahumma antas Salamu\u2026,\u201d as mentioned above, and he would not add to it. Thus, based on this Sunnah practice, if one speaks a lot or eats or drinks between the obligatory prayer and the Sunnah prayer, it does not invalidate the salah as such, rather the reward is said to be reduced.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Later Ahnaaf scholars such as Shams al-Aimmah Al-Halwani stated that to recite Awraad in between the Fard and Sunnah Salahs is acceptable, but it is best to delay them in respect of the <\/span>raatib<\/span><\/i> (order) of salah. Based on this, it was deduced that to talk excessively, eat or drink between the Fard salah and Sunnah salah would reduce the rewards. Since, tending to one\u2019s personal needs and desires (if done in excess) takes one\u2019s attention away from the spiritual state attained between the salah\u2019s and creates a disconnect to the ibadah.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If after offering the Fard salah, one planned to offer Sunnah at home, and then met someone on the way \u2013 there is no harm in exchanging greetings and small talk. However, for retaining the intention of Sunnah salah it is better to keep the conversation minimal and to keep the focus on completing the <\/span>ratibah<\/span><\/i> at home for the full reward to be earned. The same applies to shopping or any other chore on the way home.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
