Salaam. So I have been missing my prayers as I\u2019ve been sleeping but intentionally I have been going back to sleep and I miss them. My question is how do I make these prayers up when there are 3\/4 days of missed prayers. I read somewhere that shaykh Ibn Taymiyah said he wasn\u2019t sure whether prayers that are performed later would be accepted. So how do I make up these prayers or can I just ask for forgiveness and do alot of nafl prayers instead as there are alot of prayers to be made up.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAnswer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You must make up ALL the salat that you have missed in your adult life (since attaining puberty) whether the missed salat was yesterday or several years ago. It also does not matter if there are a lot of missed salats. Praying Optional prayers will not expiate for your missed salats. In fact, making up your missed salats is part of your tawbah.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The procedure of making up your missed prayers is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. If you have missed 5 or less salats since puberty, you must pray all your missed salats in order before praying the salat that is currently due upon you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n

      \n
    • Of course, if there is not enough time left is the waqt and the current salat\u2019s time will expire soon, you are excused from following this sequence.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • You are also excused if you completely forget about the missed salats when you pray your current salat and you only remember them after completing the current salat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Otherwise, you must pray your missed salats in order before praying the current salat. This is because you are known as a Sahib-ut-Tarteeb (a person who must pray in sequence).<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      1. However, if you have missed more than 5 salat’s, you do not have to follow this sequence. You can pray your current salat before you make Qadha of your missed salats. Many people who have missed years of salats find it easy to pray one Qadha salat along with every salat prayed within the waqt. So they pray five Qadha salats a day. Then once you make up ALL your missed salats, you will become a Sahib-ut-Tarteeb again.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

         <\/p>\n

        Finally, Ibn Taymiyaah (RA) may have a view like that. But it is not the view of the Hanafi madhab, nor is it the most correct view of the majority of scholars of the other three madhahib, including the Hanbalis. One must act upon the most correct opinion of his respected madhab. Thus, you must make Qadha of all your missed salats as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n
