Is it true that the majority of the Ummah is Ashari Maturidi and does istigatha? I was so shocked when a guy told me that all Ashari Maturidi except Deobandis allow istigatha…..what is the ruling on such people who do istigatha??<\/span><\/p>\n

Istigh\u0101thah, or seeking help, has different rulings based on its context:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Permissible Istigh\u0101thah:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Seeking assistance from creation within the scope oof asb\u0101b al-z\u0101hirah<\/em> such as consulting a doctor for medical treatment or using means prescribed in the Shar\u012b\u2018ah<\/em> like prayer\u2014is allowed. These are means established by repeated experience (\u2018\u0101dah<\/em>, while believing that the ultimate source of help is Allah. For instance, asking a skilled person for assistance while acknowledging Allah\u2019s control over the outcomes does not constitute shirk<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Prohibited Istigh\u0101thah: <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Seeking help from beings other than Allah for matters of the unseen (al-um\u016br al-ghaybiyyah<\/em>), such as asking the dead for assistance or requesting weather changes, can risk resembling shirk<\/em>. This mirrors the actions of the mushrik\u016bn<\/em>, who attributed independent powers to idols or beings, believing they could grant provisions, intercede, or bring benefit without Allah\u2019s will.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, the Istigh\u0101thah that many of the Ash\u2019ari and Maturidi scholars believed in and deemed permissible was praying to Allah, asking something from Him, with the belief that only He is in power to respond, but asking Allah by way of His love for someone such as the Prophet (saw) or by way of that persons\u2019 previous good deeds. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is a practice that was done even by the Sahabas as is mentioned in Sahih al Bukhari:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Whenever drought threatened them, `Umar bin Al-Khattab, used to ask Al-Abbas bin `Abdul Muttalib to invoke Allah for rain. He used to say, “O Allah! We used to ask our Prophet to invoke You for rain, and You would bless us with rain, and now we ask his uncle to invoke You for rain. O Allah ! Bless us with rain.”(1) And so it would rain.<\/span><\/p>\n
