Question:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If a wife commits adultery, is her husband\u2019s forgiveness required for her tawbah (repentance) to be accepted?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If not, why? After all, a husband has the right to exclusive intimacy with his wife, and she would have gone against this right in this case. In addition this also dishonours him, defiles his bed, and creates the possibility of her conceiving another man\u2019s child.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Does the same ruling apply if a husband commits adultery\u2014does he need his wife\u2019s forgiveness for his tawbah to be valid?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Answer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Transgressions are of two types. The first is where one transgresses the rights of Allah \ufdfb and the other is where one transgresses against the rights of man.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Concerning the former, sincere repentance to Allah \ufdfb [with its conditions] is all that is required for attaining forgiveness. As for the latter, sincere repentance to Allah \ufdfb along with the forgiveness of the one who was transgressed against is also required.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Therefore, if a wife were to commit adultery, she is required to sincerely repent to Allah \ufdfb a sincere repentance. In addition to this, she is required to sincerely beseech the forgiveness of her husband and do her best to make amends with him.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The ruling is the same whether it is the wife who committed adultery, or it is the husband who did so.<\/span><\/p>\n
