Question:

A Muslim woman works in a salon or wants to operate one for business. Is it permissible to trim (not regular cut) or to give instructions to someone to trim. She deals with Muslim and non-Muslim customers. What would be the ruling if she is a worker. And if she is an owner?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

First and foremost, The Sharia’h has placed the responsibility of earning and providing sustenance upon Men and not upon Women.

Shari’ah has given the responsibility upon a Father to take care of his Daughter(s) until they’re married, and after they are married, the responsibility shifts to her husband.

Allah Ta’ala says: “Men have charge over women (as their overseers, guardians, protectors).”

But, if the husband can’t bring in enough and fails to fulfill his responsibility or he is inactive in earning or she is a widow, there’s no one who can support her, then upon these compelling situations and scenarios she will be permitted to go out for a job along with abiding by the following conditions:

1] Occupation/Profession itself must be Lawful. It should not be something impermissible or sinful work/business.

2] Rulings of Covering oneself and hijab must be applied.

Details for Rulings of Hijab…

A] Hijab/Covering must be in accordance to Shari’ah, although during the time of severe needs, one woman is permitted to expose her face and hand, it is mandatory to cover them when there’s a fear of Fitnah. In this day and age, it is replete with Fitnah.

B] Clothing should be simple and should cover the entire body and should not reveal not even one part of the body.

C] Should not get out with perfumes and adornments.

D] Should not intermingle with Men, if there’s any need to speak to them then do not speak with a sweet voice.

E] Such jewelry should not be worn which makes noise.

F] Due to being occupied with the occupation, there should not be any shortcomings for the rights of children, husband, and family members.

G] The path should be safe and secure.

All of the aforementioned conditions have been taken from the Qur’an and Ahadith. [1]

As far as trimming and working in a salon is concerned, trimming and cutting uneven haircuts is not permissible. [3] Working at a salon and giving unlawful haircuts will not be allowed. [2]
