Question

I took an oath in anger, to say that I will not go to a certain place with a friend, as I was angry with them. Since I have cooled down I have had second thoughts. what are the conditions of me breaking my oath? does giving "kaffarah" apply to me. e.g. fasting three days, feeding or clothing 10 poor people and etc.

Answer

  1. There are 3 types of an oath (Qasam):

  2. Yameen Lagw
  3. Yameen Gamoos
  4. Yameen Muna’aqeedah

From the three categories above, yours would fall in ‘Yameen Muna’aqeedah’if you go ahead with breaking your oath or you break it

The definition is: To take an oath of doing or not doing something in the future, and then the person breaks the oath. By breaking this type of oath ‘Kaffarah’ becomes compulsory.

The Kaffarah and expiation are what is mentioned in the Qur'an and this will need to be in sequence as per what’s mentioned below.

The expiation of a broken oath is to feed ten poor persons (2 meals each), or to clothe them (1 garment each), or to give them the equivalent monetary value. If one is unable to do that, one must fast three consecutive days. (Surah Al-Maidah, V 89)
