Question

What are the opinions of the Ulama on voluntary blood donation to a blood bank?

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The human body is a sacred possession owned by Allah and entrusted to us. We are not allowed to sell, donate, or totally alter any part of our bodies including blood unless there is a dire necessity.

The Shariah has allowed the permissibility of some prohibited matters ONLY temporarily when severe or critical needs arise, (“Dire needs give temporary allowance to prohibition”).[1] When or if the need disappears then the permissibility also is lifted.

This ruling is subjective to each circumstance/individual and cannot be used as a general allowance for every person. The sale or purchase of any body part or blood will also not be allowed unless NO alternative can be found. This also refers to blood donations, only such donations that are necessary are permitted as long as the donor has given voluntary consent and there is no risk of harm.
