Question:

Can we keep the name ‘kubra’ for a girl?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

It should be noted that we are advised by the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) to give our children good names with good meaning. Therefore we should avoid naming our children names that are not commonly used by muslims and whose meanings are not known. 

The Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings upon him) is reported to have said,

“You will all be called on the day of judgement by your names and your fathers names, so therefore keep good names for yourselves” (Abū Dāwūd, Musnad Aḥmed, Dār Quṭnī)

The name “Kubra” is a unique name for girls with various meanings, it is considered to be the feminine of the Arabic word “Akbar” which means great, senior or majestic. Some say it is derived from the Persian language which has the same meaning as mentioned above.

In conclusion, keeping the name “ Kubra” for girls is allowed and can be used since it has a good meaning.

«التَّسْمِيَةُ بِاسْمٍ لَمْ يَذْكُرْهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي عِبَادَةٍ وَلَا ذَكَرَهُ رَسُولُهُ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – وَلَا يَسْتَعْمِلُهُ الْمُسْلِمُونَ تَكَلَّمُوا فِيهِ، وَالْأَوْلَى أَنْ لَا يَفْعَلَ. وَرُوِيَ: إذَا وُلِدَ لِأَحَدِكُمْ وَلَدٌ فَمَاتَ فَلَا يَدْفِنْهُ حَتَّى يُسَمِّيَهُ إنْ كَانَ ذَكَرًا بِاسْمِ»
