Question:
I am a student and I do freelancing online to pay my bills and support my family. The work I do is, Alhamdulillah, halal. But I have OCD, and I find something haram and doubtful in every single job I find online. I heard a Mufti saying “The Satan is in details.” Even if I get a fatwa on a job, my mind will still go into the details of that job and make me think there’s something haram. I know about the hadith that your dua will not be accepted if you earn haram. Is it applicable to your prayer as well? Will Allah accept someone’s prayer if he earns haram? Although I know I am earning halal money, please answer this question based on someone earning haram money, will his prayer be accepted?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Shaytan often uses overthinking to distract us and prevent us from doing good deeds or contributing positively. When you experience such thoughts, seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan, and recite the duas for protection against Shaytan.
Regarding your question, prayer is indeed a form of dua, as you are calling out to Allah for guidance, forgiveness, and mercy throughout the prayer. If someone earns haram income, it may not invalidate their prayer entirely; however, it creates a barrier in their relationship with Allah. This barrier diminishes the spiritual impact and perfection of their prayers.
For you specifically, if you know that your earnings are halal but are still plagued by doubts, recognise these thoughts as whispers from Shaytan meant to create unnecessary hardship. Trust in Allah, rely on the fatwas of reliable scholars and keep working.
