Question:

I have been having waswas about inhalation during Ramadan. I intentionally inhaled large amounts of air to check if there are dust particles that enter my throat or not. I swallowed it, because I was unsure whether the air has dust or not. I also did that to shake of waswas and wanted to prove that it’s nothing. But then, I spat it out because, again, of waswas that I may have inhaled dust, even though the particles were definitely not visible. Does it invalidate my fast & should I do Qadha’ and Kaffarat?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Dust and such which is naturally in the air does not break one’s fast, whether one breathes deeply or normally. What breaks one’s fast is deliberately inhaling smoke and putting it down one’s throat, as it is an actual substance which one can consume. Dust, on the other hand, is a part of the air and is unavoidable. Therefore, your fast would not be invalidated and no qadha or kaffarah would be necessary.

As an additional note, in the future one should strive to ignore such waswaas and put it out of one’s mind rather than acting on it in any way. If you are often plagued by such thoughts to the extent that they affect your worship, then it may be helpful for you to seek the services of a Muslim counsellor or therapist.
