Question:
In one of the companies where I have invested, I only buy and sell halal stocks. However, this company is providing me with an annual interest of 0.01%. Upon contacting them to inquire about the permissibility of this interest in accordance with our religion, they informed me that they are unable to offer an alternative, as this is the company’s policy.
Given this situation, should I consider moving my investment to another company, or should I donate the annual interest to the poor people?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Riba (usury) is forbidden in both small and large amounts. If there are other stock options which provide you with absolutely zero interest, then it is definitely advisable for you to invest in those companies.
Any interest which you previously accrued from this stock should ideally be returned to that company. If this is not possible, you should donate that small amount of interest to poor and needy Muslims without the intention of earning reward for the donation.
In conclusion, you should sell your shares in this company and purchase stocks which do not accrue small amounts of interest. Avoiding Riba altogether will lead to an increase of Barakah (blessings) in your wealth and investments. May Allah Ta’ala reward you for being scrupulous in matters of Halal and Haram.
Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
