Is It Permissible To Recite Quran During Irregular Bleeding?

Question:

 

I have received the following query from a student, if anyone can kindly provide some scholarly guidance, that would be much appreciated:

 

‘Ok so basically there’s a woman who’s had her period for a like 11 or 12 days now she has diabetes and high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels, So currently she’s still bleeding and it’s period blood But she wants to read Quran

 

What should she do?

 

She has hormonal imbalances as well that affect the length of her period’

 

 

 

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

 

Answer:

 

According to the Hanafi Madhab, the maximum duration of menstruation (hayd) is 10 days. Since this woman has been bleeding for 11 or 12 days, any bleeding beyond the 10th day is classified as istihādah (irregular bleeding) rather than hayd.

 

 

In the state of istihādah, she is considered tāhir (ritually pure) and is permitted to recite the Qur’an, pray, and fast. However, she must perform wudhu for each prayer time, as istihādah does not nullify wudhu but requires renewal for every obligatory prayer.

التِّرْمِذِيّ: عَن عدي بن ثَابت، عَن أَبِيه، عَن جده، عَن النَّبِي [ﷺ] أَنه قَالَ (فِي) الْمُسْتَحَاضَة: «تدع الصَّلَاة أَيَّام أقرائها الَّتِي كَانَت تحيض فِيهَا ثمَّ تَغْتَسِل وتتوضأ عِنْد كل صَلَاة، وتصوم وَتصلي». وَإِذا جَازَ الصَّوْم وَالصَّلَاة جَازَ الْوَطْء بنتيجة الْإِجْمَاع.

أَبُو دَاوُد: عَن عِكْرِمَة قَالَ: «كَانَت أم حَبِيبَة تستحاض، وَكَانَ زَوجهَا يَغْشَاهَا. وَعنهُ: عَن حمْنَة بنت جحش» أَنَّهَا كَانَت مُسْتَحَاضَة أَو تستحاض وَكَانَ زَوجهَا يُجَامِعهَا “.

بَاب الْحيض

الْكَلَام فِي هَذَا الْبَاب فِي تَفْسِير الْحيض وَالنّفاس والاستحاضة فَنَقُول الْحيض فِي الشَّرْع هُوَ الدَّم الْخَارِج من الرَّحِم الممتد إِلَى وَقت مَعْلُوم وَاخْتلف فِي الْوَقْت

قَالَ عُلَمَاؤُنَا أقل الْحيض ثَلَاثَة أَيَّام ولياليها وَأَكْثَره عشرَة أَيَّام ولياليها

وَرُوِيَ عَن أبي يُوسُف أقل الْحيض يَوْمَانِ وَأكْثر الْيَوْم الثَّالِث

وَقَالَ الشَّافِعِي أَقَله يَوْم وَلَيْلَة وَأَكْثَره خَمْسَة عشر يَوْمًا

وَالصَّحِيح قَوْلنَا لما رُوِيَ عَن أبي أُمَامَة الْبَاهِلِيّ عَن النَّبِي ﷺ أَنه قَالَ أقل الْحيض ثَلَاثَة أَيَّام ولياليها وَأَكْثَره عشرَة أَيَّام ولياليها وَمَا زَاد فَهُوَ اسْتِحَاضَة
