Is The Area Below A Woman’s Chin Part Of The ‘Awrah During Prayer?

Question:

 

Is the area below the chin considered as awrah for a woman? I read about this a few days ago and there seems to be some differences in opinion. I think I have often left that part uncovered during salah. If it has to be covered, are all of my previous prayers invalid even if it was due to ignorance/forgetfulness?

Answer:

 

Ensuring one covers their awrah is of paramount importance. Covering the awrah in Salah is a mandatory condition. This means the Awrah must be covered for Salah to be valid.

 

The area below the chin is part of the neck and considered awrah. If a quarter of the entire neck area (all around, back to front)  is left uncovered, then the Salah must be repeated. If a small portion, less than a quarter, is left uncovered. i.e. just a small area under the chin, then the salah will be valid and will not have to be repeated.

سَتْرُ الْعَوْرَةِ شَرْطٌ لِصِحَّةِ الصَّلَاةِ إذَا قُدِرَ عَلَيْهِ. كَذَا فِي مُحِيطِ السَّرَخْسِيِّ.

الْعَوْرَةُ لِلرَّجُلِ مِنْ تَحْتِ السُّرَّةِ حَتَّى تُجَاوِزَ رُكْبَتَيْهِ فَسُرَّتُهُ لَيْسَتْ بِعَوْرَةٍ عِنْدَ عُلَمَائِنَا الثَّلَاثَةِ وَرُكْبَتُهُ عَوْرَةٌ عِنْدَ عُلَمَائِنَا جَمِيعًا هَكَذَا فِي الْمُحِيطِ.

بَدَنُ الْحُرَّةِ عَوْرَةٌ إلَّا وَجْهَهَا وَكَفَّيْهَا وَقَدَمَيْهَا. كَذَا فِي الْمُتُونِ وَشَعْرُ الْمَرْأَةِ مَا عَلَى رَأْسِهَا عَوْرَةٌ وَأَمَّا الْمُسْتَرْسِلُ فَفِيهِ رِوَايَتَانِ الْأَصَحُّ أَنَّهُ عَوْرَةٌ. كَذَا فِي الْخُلَاصَةِ وَهُوَ الصَّحِيحُ وَبِهِ أَخَذَ الْفَقِيهُ أَبُو اللَّيْثِ وَعَلَيْهِ الْفَتْوَى.

انْكِشَافُ مَا دُونَ الرُّبْعِ مَعْفُوٌّ إذَا كَانَ فِي عُضْوٍ وَاحِدٍ وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي عُضْوَيْنِ أَوْ أَكْثَرَ وَجُمِعَ وَبَلَغَ رُبْعَ أَدْنَى عُضْوٍ مِنْهَا يَمْنَعُ جَوَازَ الصَّلَاةِ. كَذَا فِي شَرْحِ الْمَجْمَعِ لِابْنِ الْمَلَكِ وَلَا يُعْتَبَرُ الْجَمْعُ بِالْأَجْزَاءِ كَالْأَسْدَاسِ وَالْأَتْسَاعِ بَلْ بِالْقَدْرِ حَتَّى لَوْ انْكَشَفَ مِنْ الْأُذُنِ تُسْعُهَا وَمِنْ السَّاقِ تُسْعُهَا يُمْنَعُ؛ لِأَنَّ الْمَكْشُوفَ قَدْرُ رُبْعِ الْأُذُنِ. هَكَذَا فِي الْقُنْيَةِ.
