Question:

I was fasting and I got very stimulated, and I put my private part between my thighs to try and calm down, but it only made it more stimulated to the extent that semen came out. I’m wondering is my fast broken and if so, do I do Qadha or Kaffarah?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Fasting in Ramadhan is one of the most sacred acts of worship in Islam. It requires abstaining from anything that nullifies the fast, including eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, and in some cases, deliberate physical stimulation that leads to ejaculation.

In Hanafi Fiqh, if ejaculation occurs due to intentional physical stimulation—such as touching, rubbing, pressing the thighs together, or any form of physical interaction that is done deliberately and results in arousal—the fast is broken, and Qadhā (make-up fast) becomes obligatory. However, Kaffārah (major expiation) is only required when the fast is broken by actual sexual intercourse. Where the private part was placed between the thighs to reduce stimulation, but this resulted in increased arousal and ejaculation this is considered deliberate physical stimulation, even if the intention was to calm down.

Since ejaculation occurred because of physical stimulation that could reasonably be expected to cause arousal, the fast is broken. However, since there was no actual intercourse, Kaffārah is not required.
