Question:

 

Can a husband and wife combine wealth and give Zakah and they have shared debt they then deduct the debt?

 

 

 

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

 

Answer:

 

Zakah is an individual obligation that is extended to every Muslim and Muslimah respectively.[1] The same holds true in the case of marriage.

 

Hence, it will not be permissible to combine the wealth of the husband and wife as well as share each other’s debt when it comes to the calculation and dischargement of zakah.

 

Nevertheless, if by combining one means taking the husband’s zakatable wealth after having deducted his liabilities and the wife’s zakatable wealth after having deducted her respective liabilities and thereafter distributing the zakah together, then this will be permissible.
