Question:

Assalamu Alaikum

I’m suffering from istihada. I read that women are not automatically under the excused category to just renew wudhu every Salah. The issue is I’m having a light discharge of a pink, yellow and brown substance but it’s continuous.

I wash up, do wudhu and start praying and it comes down as I pray. I don’t know if I fall under the category as it’s not heavy but it’s always there when I’m going to the toilet but how do I know if it’s there for the whole duration as I can’t check it every moment? I check before doing wudhu and it’s there and I check after praying fard only (when I remove the kursuf see below) and it’s there.

If I’m not under excused person, the other issue is I read I’m supposed to block it with a tampon or menses cups. I’m married but I’ve never used those. I’m also not comfortable, I literally fear inserting anything, due to vaginal dryness and what I have come to think is vaginismus. For example, I went for a check-up for PCOS and the nurse frowned at me why am I not letting the tool inside if I’m married? But it’s just what it is. I am afraid and I’m working on it from a marital perspective but anything else I feel is too much for me for now at least.

Am I under the excused category so don’t need to block it? Or can I be excused from using this and can I just put a towel between the lips very tight and just push it a bit up, though I don’t know if it actually is classed as going inside? But it does come out with the coloured discharge every time I remove it. It’s similar to when using kursuf for the end of periods. I have been doing this to pray my fard salah during istihada as I don’t know if I’m excused or what else to do as I can’t use the tampon or cups.

Please advise me. I’m sorry for the details but I need to explain how I can’t use those internal things. I’m also afraid of my salah validity and I don’t know what to do.

Answer:

Wa Alikumus Salaam

An excused person (ma‘dhūr) in respect to the laws of purification is the one who experiences the continuous exiting of ritual impurity from the body, such as continuous nose bleed, dripping of urine continuously or chronic vaginal discharge (Istihādah), etc in such a way that it remains for the period of one complete salāt time and one does not find enough time wherein he/she can perform wudūand can pray the fard of the salāt.

After becoming a ma‘dhūr, it is not a condition that the bleeding, etc remain for the whole salāt time in order to remain a ma‘dhūr, but rather, it is a condition that it occurs at least once throughout the other salāt timings.

A person will cease being a ma‘dhūr when the bleeding, etc fails to appear once for a whole complete salāt time.

If an excused (ma‘dhūr) person’s clothing has some physical impurity on it and the impurity is equal to the amount of a dirham and it is not possible to wash it because of the clothing becoming impure again, then it will not be necessary to wash it before praying the salāt.

However, if he thinks that it is possible to wash it and perform the salāt without the impurity getting on the clothing again, then it will be necessary to remove the impurity otherwise the salāt will not be valid.

Based on the description given in the question it is evident that you are considered a ma‘dhūr (excused person) so the above rulings will be applied.
