Question:

I am a digital artist who draws solely using the computer; I want to know if drawing just balls that have eyes that express different emotions for example (^  ^) or (u   u) or (‘  ‘) is permissible. It’s going to be for a game where you take care of them, and where they actually serve as a reminder for you to do different activities in the day like go outside for a walk, drink water, water your plants, etc.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Contemporary jurists have differences of opinion regarding digital pictures and drawings as this is a contemporary matter.

Some of the leading jurists of our time don’t consider digital images as Tasweer (pictures & statues that are prohibited according to Hadith).

However, it is still better to abstain from digital pictures or facial drawings.

Numan Bin Basheer R.A. said;

“I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, ‘Both legal and illegal things are clear but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious things saves his religion and his honor. And whoever indulges in these suspicious things is like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware! Every king has a Hima and the Hima of Allah on the earth is His illegal (forbidden) things. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoiled the whole body gets spoiled and that is the heart.”
