Answer:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

Manzil is a book comprising of specific verses from the Quran often read as a deterrent from jinn and black magic, but also from all types of calamities. The origin of Manzil can be found in a hadith related by Imam Hakim in his book “Al-Mustadrak.”

The hadith is as follows:

Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka`b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when a Bedouin came and said: “O Prophet of Allah, I have a brother who has a problem.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked, “And what is his problem?”

The Bedouin said, “He has a slight mental derangement.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told him to bring his brother to him. So, the Bedouin brought his brother before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), so he (peace be upon him) read over him:

1.    Surat al-Fatiha

2.    The last four verses of Surat al-Baqarah

3.    Two verses from Surah al-Baqarah starting from Verse 163

4.    Ayat al-Kursi (2:155)

5.    One verse from Surah Aal-Imran (3:18)

6.    One verse from Surah Al-A’raf (7:54)

7.    The last verse of Surah al-Mu’minun (23:116)

8.    One verse from Surah al-Jinn (72:3)

9.    Ten verses from the beginning of Surat al-Saffat (37: 1-10)

10. Last 3 verses of Surat al-Hashr (59:22-24)

11. The last three Surahs of the Quran

And when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) read this upon him, he got up as if he never had a problem to complain about.[1]

“Ruqyah” refers to the act of releasing people from jinn possession or the evil eye. The verses quoted above are often used for such a task as well as other verses and supplications derived from the Hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Reading manzil is an extremely virtuous act endorsed by many ‘Ulama. The purpose of reading it is to bring about the blessings of Allah Ta’ala in one’s house and to prevent the evil acts of Shaytan, such as possession, whispers or the evil eye.
