Question:

I have two questions

1. Can you use live worms as fishing bait? I have heard multiple opinions. Fishing with live worms increases your chance to catch fish so I was wondering if it is allowed to use it.

2. What foot do you exit out of the house?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Abbas ( رضى الله عنهما ) reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) have said:

“Do not make anything having life as a target.”1

Likewise, Saeed Bin Jubair (رحمه الله) reported that;

Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Umar ( رضى الله عنهما ) happened to pass by a party of men who had tied a hen and were shooting arrows at it. As soon as they saw Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Umar ( رضى الله عنهما ), they scattered from it. Thereupon Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Umar ( رضى الله عنهما ) said:

Who has done this? Verily Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) has invoked curse upon him who does this. 2

Hence, it is not permissible to use live bait for fishing as this causes pain and suffering to the creature.

Regarding the second question, it is narrated by Sayyidah Aisha (رضى الله عنها) that:

The Prophet of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to start everything from the right (for good things) whenever it was possible in all his affairs, for example in washing, combing or wearing shoes.” 3

The general rule is that it is preferable (Mustahab) for one to commence anything virtuous from the right side, such as wudu, ghusl, tayammum, wearing clothes, putting on shoes, socks, etc.

However, if there is anything that is opposed to being good or virtuous, then one should start from the left side, like when entering the toilet or cleansing oneself whilst in the toilet.4 Therefore, it is recommended (Mustahab) enter the house with the right foot. Nevertheless, there is a difference of opinion when exiting the house. The first view is that it is recommended to exit the house with the left foot.

The second view is that it is recommended (Mustahab) exit the house with the right foot. 5
