Does Marijuana Invalidate Salah?

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

The issue is whether by taking marijuana or any other drugs would a person’s wudhu be valid or not. If his wudhu is not valid, thus his salah will not be accepted. If it is valid, his salah will be accepted.

The Islamic ruling is that if a person takes drugs but is not in the state of intoxication and still has some level of control and understanding of things around him, his wudhu, will remain. However, if he gets intoxicated and does not have some level of control and understanding of things around him his wudhu will break, thus the subsequent salah will not be accepted. (Kitabul Fiqh p.131 v.1 &  Fatawa Mahmoodiyah p.36 v.2)

The hadith you have mentioned is narrated by Saaiduna Abdullal Ibn Umar Radiallahu Anhu that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “If anyone drinks wine Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he again repeats the offence Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. if he repeats it a fourth time Allah will not accept any prayer from him for forty days, and if he repents Allah will not forgive him, but will give him to drink of the river of the fluid flowing from the inhibitions of hell.” (Sunan Tirimizi p.8 v.2)

This hadith is about drinking wine, however, the scholars have unanimously agreed that drugs is an intoxicant and the warning of the above hadith will also apply. Shaikul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) has said that Hashish (Cannabis) is an intoxicant like wine.” (Majmooul Fatawa p.264 v.4)

However, it is still necessary to read the salah. The obligation of salah still remains; however, one will not receive the full reward of salah.
