Question:

I would like to know if E472e is halaal? It is used in most breads and buns that are available in the supermarket. Does the tartaric acid go through a reaction or process which changes its mahiyah?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Tartaric acid is simply an addition to a food which makes the food taste sharper and stands out in terms of flavour on the tongue. It is a natural occurring item which comes from plants. It in itself is not haram as it is originally a plant. All plants, fruits and vegetables are halaal and consumable.

E472e is only halaal if it originates and emerges from a halaal source, a plant. If all other ingredients are halaal in the item, then this item of e472e will also be halaal.
