Question:

I make intention in the following way before performing ghusl:

When I am sure that I am in janābah and impure after menstruation: I intend to perform ghusl for removing major ritual impurity which includes both janābah and menstruation.

When I am not sure if I am in janābah or not (I am sure that I am impure because of menstruation): I intend to perform ghusl from major ritual impurity. (I do not mention menstruation or janābah. I may be in janābah, in case, I may have had a wet dream).

I know that in the Ḥanafī school, the intention is not necessary for ghusl. Is my ghusl valid in the explained cases? Will my ghusl be valid if I just make my intention like this: I intend to remove major ritual impurity (not mentioning what it includes whether I am sure or not)?

Answer:

In the Ḥanafī school, once the farāi (mandatory acts) of ghusl (ritual bath) is completed, the ghusl is valid and one will be deemed clean and pure. The 3 farāi in the Ḥanafī school are, gargling to rinse the mouth, cleaning the nose up to the soft bone, and finally washing one’s entire external body to the extent that not even a single hair is left dry. In other schools of jurisprudence, the intention is mandatory. The mere intention of gaining purity from impurities prior to making the ghusl is sufficient. There is no obligation to specify which impurity you are removing. – (See: Rad Al-Muḥtār, Vol 1, Page 151, Dār Al-Fikr1, Al-Fiqh Al-Islāmīy Wa Adillatuh, Vol 1, Page 527, Dār Al-Fikr2)
