Question:

How does one be grateful to Allah? Once Allah answers du’a does one need to be grateful for lifetime?

So my supplication got answered last year, do I need to thank Allah everyday onwards for it?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Answer:

One shows gratitude to Allah s.w.t by saying ‘Alhamdulillah’, thanking him, doing good deeds and adhering to his commands. One needs to be grateful for everything they have in life, even being alive in the first place. One needs to be thankful for every day they wake up alive, for being guided to Islam and being able to do good deeds. One even needs to be thankful to Allah s.w.t for granting them the Taufeeq to be thankful to Allah s.w.t. Thus, there is no moment in one’s life where they no longer need to thank Allah s.w.t or have thanked him sufficiently for all that he has granted them. One should therefore be constantly thankful to Allah s.w.t throughout their life, from the day they are born until the day they die, not just after a Du’a has been answered [1].

Nevertheless, to have one’s Du’a be responded to should be used as an opportunity to express increased gratitude, on top of all the other blessings one receives daily. One should take this opportunity to educate themselves in knowledge and understanding regarding Allah s.w.t and Islam and to introduce a habit of regular daily gratitude towards Allah s.w.t into their lives for all that he has given them.
