Question:

Salam,

I would appreciate some Sunni Islam guidance on a matter relating potentially to waswasa.

The question is regarding purity, so please excuse the sensitive and uncomfortable subject matter.

Very often after I wake up in the morning, mazi is released (in small amounts) shortly after waking. It is so frequent that I could predict it will happen even without checking, and I would be right. I used to check often by placing tissues in that area, and mazi would be released. This is annoying and inconvenient for me because if I want to take a nap, I would need to purify the clothes, and I worry it makes the bed dirty.

Question: After waking up from sleep during the night or a short nap during the day, etc., do I have to check the private area for mazi even if I don’t feel anything exit? Usually, I would say no, but since it happens so often, even without feeling it, to the extent that it is a usual occurrence, this question is being raised.

Thank you very much for reading the question to help overcome my difficulties and potential waswasa.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

If your predominant opinion is that some mazi has come out, then you should check to see whether this is the case. If your predominant opinion is that it hasn’t, then you will not be required to check, although should you later check and find that some mazi was released, you should then wash it.

If you do not feel any mazi then you will not be required to check for it, given that you could not have known should it have come out.

You may find it useful to know that it is only necessary to wash the impurity if the size of the stain exceeds that of a dirham (approximately 2 cm diameter, similar to a 50p coin). However, washing is still recommended.

And only Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) knows best.
