Guidance on Reciting and Memorizing Qur’an During Menstruation

Question:
Has any one of our Ulema given permission for older girls doing Hifz to carry on reciting/memorizing whilst in the state of Haidh? Maybe taking the Maliki opinion based on Daroorah?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

According to the Ahnaaf Ulamaa, the reason for refraining from reciting the Qur’an during menstruation is due to the state of Hukmi najasah (ritual impurity) that it entails. Therefore, a woman in this state is not permitted to recite the Qur’an or touch the Quran, under the direction of the Quranic verse:

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ (79 Waqiah)
Not to be touched unless by the pure (Surah Waqiah).

However, in the case of Hifz Ud Din (preserving religious knowledge), scholars have suggested that while she must not touch the words of the Qur’an, she may recite it in shorter segments, pausing between words, to aid in retaining her memorisation.

And yes, Imam Mālik permitted the recitation of the Qur’an during menstruation, except when in a state of Janabah (major ritual impurity).

In answer to your question about using the Maliki school in terms of Daroorah, you would not be advised to ‘swap’ schools of thought when you feel the need arises. It would still be advisable for you to follow the Ahnaaf school of thought if that is the school you follow.
