Question:

What advice should be given to someone who used to sell drugs and gamble, purchased his house with the proceeds and now has made taubah and is earning a low but halal income and is raising a family?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Answer:

He will not have to sell the house he purchased with the impermissible earnings [1]. He should continuously repent for his past mistakes, seek to make amends where possible, strive to remain on the right path and avoid returning to his old ways, be content with what he has, be grateful for the second chance that Allah s.w.t has granted him and guide his children to avoid his mistakes and remain upright [2].

[1] Surah Al-Baqarah 275:

{ … فَمَن جَاءَهُ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ فَانتَهَىٰ فَلَهُ مَا سَلَفَ وَأَمْرُهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ۖ وَمَنْ عَادَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ ۞}

Surah Al-Baqarah 279:

{ فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُوا فَأْذَنُوا بِحَرْبٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۖ وَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَلَكُمْ رُءُوسُ أَمْوَالِكُمْ لَا تَظْلِمُونَ وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ ۞}

[2] Surah Az-Zumar 53:

{ قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ ۞}
