Question:

How do we reconcile the concept of kuff in marriage and that Nabi SAW for Hazrat Zaid RA married to Hazrat Zainuib RA

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Zaid ibn Haritha was the adopted son of the Messenger of Allah (May peace and blessings be upon him). He was very beloved to the Rasullah (saw), to such an extent that he was known as “Hibi Rasulullah” (The beloved of the Messenger of Allah). He was a very pious man.

Zainab bint Jahsh was the cousin of the Messenger of Allah (May peace and blessings be upon him). She was a very pious lady. She was very beautiful and many proposals were coming her way.

Thereafter, the Messenger of Allah (May peace and blessings be upon him) wanted Zainab to marry Zaid ibn Haritha. Most likely it could have been due to the piety they both had in their lives. For the sole purpose of piety, they would be a good match for each other.

The family of Zainab were not very keen about this. So Allah (swt) revealed the ayat:

“It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should (thereafter) have any choice about their matter. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.” (33:36)

Therefore, we see that this marriage was wanted by the Messenger of Allah (May peace and blessings be upon him) for whatever reason there was. Perhaps it may have been due to the piety of both Zaid and Zainab. Nevertheless, whatever the reason may be, we believe this is what the Messenger of Allah (May peace and blessings be upon him) wanted and we shouldn’t ask further questions.
