How to calm the heart?

Answer:

In The Name Of Allah, The Most-Merciful, The Most Kind

Allāh says: "Unquestionably, the hearts find comfort/peace/tranquillity in the remembrance of Allāh" (Qur'ān, 13:28). He also says: "So remember Me, and I will remember you". (Qur'ān, 2:152).

The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said: "There is no group that remembers Allah, except that the angels encompass them, mercy covers them, and tranquillity descends upon them: and Allāh remembers (mentions) them before those who are with Him [i.e. the angels]" (Jāmiʻ al-Tirmidhī, ḥadīth 2910, 3378).

Although there is much focus nowadays on remembering Allāh through nashīds or other means, the best remembrance (dhikr) of Allāh is to read and follow the Qur'ān.

Allāh refers to the Qur'ān as THE dhikr: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Dhikr [i.e. the Qur’ān], and We will preserve it" (Qur'ān, 15:9).

The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said: "Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allāh, he will receive one good deed from it, and the good deed will reward of ten the like of it" (Jāmiʻ al-Tirmidhī, ḥadīth 2910).

The dhikr of Allāh should not just be uttered from the tongue, but properly understood, and then acted upon. Saʻīd bin Jubayr reported: "Anyone engaged in obeying Allāh is in fact engaged in the Dhikr of Allāh".

To achieve calmness and tranquillity in the heart, read the Qur'ān frequently with understanding and act upon it by obeying Allāh's commands and staying away from what He prohibited.

Ibn Taymiyyah said: "The heart cannot be sound, or succeed, or find joy, or be happy, or feel pleasure, or be good, or be at peace, or find tranquillity, except by worshipping its Lord, loving Him and returning to Him. Even if it attains all that it can enjoy of created things, it will not feel at peace or find tranquillity, because it has an inherent need for its Lord, for He is the focus of its worship, love and seeking, and this is the only way to attain joy, happiness, pleasure, peace, and tranquillity." (al-ʻUbūdiyyah, 97).

In addition to the Qur'ān, one duʻā taught to us by the Prophet ﷺ (Saḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth 6369) to deal with anxiety, worry, and sorrow was:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ، وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

The translation is: "O Allāh! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men".
